One of the first things I did out of college was to buy myself a new 35mm camera. The whole package, a Pentax ME Super with three lenses, flash and a tripod. I took pictures of anything that inspired me. Anything from sunset to sunrises, flowers, nature, animals and so on.
Newly Married to my wife Sandy of now eighteen years I captured images of the Florida Keys while honeymooning.
Upon returning and showing the images to friends I had one ask me to photograph their wedding. I took on the task with full exuberance and before I knew it a second bride was asking. After photographing fourteen weddings in the next twelve months I invested in a medium format camera and launched Shutterly Perfect Photography.
A meager start in an outbuilding at my home soon led to a separate studio and quitting my full time job as an electronic technician with McDonnell Douglas. Taking on the new role of full time professional I photographed everything from sports events to weddings. With the digital age coming fast at me I embraced the opportunity and have never looked back.
Although at first I was reluctant to change the new technology was comforting to me coming from a technical trade. Digital capture has been the springboard to where I am today as a portrait artist. It has allowed me to go beyond taking a simple picture to creating a portrait that captures not only the innocence of a child but the tender moment of a father giving his “little girl” away at the alter.
I am currently a member of the Professional Photographers Association of North Florida and attend training from Masters of the craft each month. This year I was nominated to serve on the PPSNF board and have taught seminars to other professionals. I have started on the path to earning my Master of Photography degree through the Professional Photographers of America. In 2007 I started competing in the PPSNF print education program and was awarded the North Eastern Florida First Time Competitors Award for 2007 by my piers.
Refining my skills in the technical aspect and delving into my artistic expression while creating a portrait has resulted in a change in style to available light portraiture. I find natural light to be softer and more pleasing to a subject than strobes. Photography literally means “ painting with light” painting with window light or available light is the essence of who I am as an artist, how I choose to capture the inner emotion of the subject. I see in shades of light, nuances of shadows and highlights, and mold them together into a beautiful creation called a portrait.
Whether it is of a newborn baby, a two year old, senior high student, pet, family, or bride & groom I have been blessed to be a part of the creation of images that will be cherished for years to come. I feel the portraits that I create are an investment in memories for the future. Our life is but a vapor and when we look back at the milestones of our children's lives it will be the Portraits that we invest in now that will tell the story of who they were to their children.
What a great time my children and I have going home to my parents house and trifling through the albums and boxes of portraits. They listen in anticipation while I relate stories from my youth associated with each picture. I see a part of myself reflected in my children's faces and ponder anew the heritage I will leave behind.
I am honored and privileged to be in a profession that will carry this legacy on to future generations. To know that 100 years from now someone will be pouring over a box of old photographs that carry the emblem of Shutterly Perfect brings a smile to my face and a surreal sense of satisfaction. Each portrait I create is a moment in time, it reflects a touch, a glance, an expression of love or a fleeting emotion. They all come from my heart to your wall.
I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.
